# What is Baggage allowance?

The baggage allowance is the weight and number of bags a ticket includes without an extra charge.

Also called: Free baggage allowance.

## How it works #

It depends on fare, cabin, status and route, and, when several airlines are involved, on whose rule applies. On international journeys the carrier operating the longest sector usually sets the allowance for the whole trip; on separate tickets each sector follows its own rule. Elite benefits normally raise the allowance regardless of the fare booked.

## Not to be confused with #

The baggage allowance is not the same as the liability limit: the allowance says what may travel, the limit what the airline owes if it is lost.

## In German #

The German term is Freigepäckmenge. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/freigepaeckmenge)
