# What is Elite qualification?

Elite qualification is the proof that enough flights, qualifying miles or spending have accumulated within a defined period to reach a status tier.

Also called: Qualification period.

## How it works #

Programmes measure differently: by segments, by qualifying miles, by ticket revenue, or by a combination. What matters most is how the period is cut, calendar year or a rolling window from joining, because that decides when the count resets to zero. Anyone sitting just below a threshold should know the period before planning an extra trip.

## Not to be confused with #

Elite qualification is not the same as earning redeemable miles: redeemable miles stay and get spent, while qualifying totals expire when the period ends.

## In German #

The German term is Statusqualifikation. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/statusqualifikation)
