# What is Hotel star rating?

A hotel star rating is the classification of a property in stars, describing facilities and service by the criteria of the country concerned.

Also called: Hotel classification.

## How it works #

Criteria are set nationally and do not compare across borders; in some countries an association awards the stars, in others the hotel rates itself. Booking sites sometimes display their own ratings that correspond to no official scheme. For travellers that means stars say something about facilities, little about quality, and nothing about the points price in a loyalty programme.

## Not to be confused with #

A hotel star rating is not the same as an award category: stars describe the facilities, the category the points price inside the programme.

## In German #

The German term is Hotelklassifizierung. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/hotelklassifizierung)
