An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is the US number for people not eligible for a Social Security number, issued strictly for tax purposes.

Also called: ITIN.

How it works#

The number shares its format with a Social Security number and is processed in the same field by most systems. Whether a card issuer accepts it is a house rule and differs by product. Banks accept it for deposit accounts more often than card issuers accept it for credit accounts. It says nothing about residence or work authorisation, and without a reported account it produces no credit file.

Not to be confused with#

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is not a Social Security number: it confers no right to work and fewer lenders accept it.
