# What is Interline agreement?

An interline agreement is a contract between two airlines to accept each other’s tickets, transfer baggage and rebook passengers during disruption.

Also called: Interlining.

## How it works #

Without one, an airline cannot move a passenger onto another carrier even when seats are empty, which is precisely why some rebookings fail during disruption. The agreement also underpins through-checked baggage and tickets that combine several airlines on one document. Low-cost carriers generally hold no interline agreements at all.

## Not to be confused with #

An interline agreement is not the same as a codeshare: interlining governs technical acceptance of tickets, a codeshare governs selling under another airline’s flight number.

## In German #

The German term is Interline-Abkommen. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/interline-abkommen)

- [Codeshare](/en/glossary/codeshare): A codeshare is a flight sold by one airline under its own flight number while a different airline actually operates it.
- [Through-checked baggage](/en/glossary/through-checked-baggage): Through-checked baggage is luggage tagged to the final destination at the first departure, so it does not need collecting at the connecting airport.
- [Rebooking on another airline](/en/glossary/rebooking-on-another-airline): Rebooking on another airline is transferring a ticket to a different carrier so the passenger reaches the destination sooner after disruption.
