# What is Late checkout?

Late checkout is the elite benefit of keeping a hotel room beyond the standard departure time, in almost all cases subject to availability.

## How it works #

That condition is not a formality: on busy days and in properties with group business the benefit is routinely refused. Guaranteed times exist in only a few programmes and usually at the top tiers. Resorts exclude it more often than city hotels, because arrival and departure days there run on a fixed rhythm.

## Not to be confused with #

Late checkout is not the same as an extra night: it extends the day of departure and creates no right to the room for the following night.

## In German #

The German term is Später Check-out. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/spaeter-checkout)
