# What are Lithium battery rules?

Lithium battery rules are safety regulations for batteries on aircraft: power banks and spare cells belong in hand luggage, never in checked bags.

Also called: Power bank rules.

## How it works #

The reason is fire risk: a cell going into thermal runaway can be dealt with in the cabin and not in the hold. Above certain capacities the airline’s approval is needed, and above a further limit carriage is prohibited entirely. Several airlines additionally ban charging in flight and storing power banks in the overhead bin.

## Not to be confused with #

Lithium battery rules are not the same as an airline’s baggage allowance: battery rules follow international dangerous goods regulations and apply regardless of fare.
