# What is Maximum permitted mileage?

Maximum permitted mileage is the greatest distance a distance-based fare allows between origin and destination, detours included.

Also called: MPM.

## How it works #

It comes from classic fare construction and permits detours and stopovers as long as the sum of sectors stays below the limit. Exceeding it adds a graduated surcharge. For travellers it is the basis of every creative routing in round-the-world and circle fares; in dynamically priced fares it no longer plays a role.

## Not to be confused with #

Maximum permitted mileage is not the same as the actual distance flown: it is a fare limit, not a statement about the route itself.

## In German #

The German term is Höchstflugstrecke. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/hoechstflugstrecke)
