# What is Phantom award space?

Phantom award space is an award seat a search displays but cannot book, because the operating airline’s system does not confirm it.

Also called: Phantom space.

## How it works #

The display error comes from stale data in partner systems: inventory was pulled back, and another programme’s search interface keeps showing the old state. Travellers notice it when the booking fails at the final step or on the phone. The only defence is to confirm availability in the destination programme before any points are transferred into it.

## Not to be confused with #

Phantom award space is not the same as a married segment: with a married segment the seat is real and only bookable in combination, while phantom space no longer exists at all.

## In German #

The German term is Phantomverfügbarkeit. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/phantomverfuegbarkeit)
