# What is Room upgrade?

A room upgrade is the allocation of a higher room category than the one booked, granted as an elite benefit and usually subject to availability.

Also called: Suite upgrade.

## How it works #

Whether suites are included differs sharply between programmes; many cap the benefit at better-located standard rooms. The decision is made at the front desk on arrival, driven by occupancy and length of stay. Long stays and full houses reduce the chance, while midweek arrivals in city hotels improve it.

## Not to be confused with #

A room upgrade is not the same as a confirmed suite booking: the upgrade is an allocation without entitlement, the booking a contract for a specific category.

## In German #

The German term is Zimmeraufwertung. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/zimmeraufwertung)
