# What is Round-the-world ticket?

A round-the-world ticket is a single ticket for a journey circling the globe in one direction, with several stopovers inside a fixed set of rules.

Also called: RTW ticket.

## How it works #

Pricing follows total distance or the number of continents crossed rather than individual sectors. The rules fix the direction of travel, limit backtracking and cap the total length of the trip. Because everything sits on one ticket, changing dates on single sectors is often cheap while reordering the route is expensive or forbidden. Alliances and award programmes each offer their own versions.

## Not to be confused with #

A round-the-world ticket is not the same as a string of separately booked flights: the string is usually cheaper up front but loses through-ticketing protection and cheap change rights.

## In German #

The German term is Weltreiseticket. [German version of this term](/de/glossar/weltreiseticket)
