Trip delay insurance is a card benefit that reimburses necessary extra costs during a long delay or an interrupted trip, such as hotels and meals.

Also called: Trip interruption cover.

How it works#

Cover starts after a minimum delay, requires the trip to have been paid with the card, and reimburses documented expenses up to a cap. It sits alongside statutory claims against the airline rather than replacing them: what the airline owes as duty of care is not paid twice. Receipts and written confirmation of the delay are a precondition for any payout.

Not to be confused with#

Trip delay insurance is not the same as statutory compensation: insurance reimburses actual costs, while compensation is a flat entitlement owed by the airline.

  • Travel medical insurance: Travel medical insurance covers medical treatment abroad, including repatriation, which state health systems usually do not pay for.
