What is Hidden-city ticketing?

Hidden-city ticketing means booking a flight beyond the intended destination and getting off at the connecting airport because the longer trip is cheaper.

Hidden-city ticketing means booking a flight beyond the intended destination and getting off at the connecting airport because the longer trip is cheaper.

Also called: Skiplagging, Throwaway ticketing.

How it works#

The practice breaches almost every airline’s conditions of carriage and has concrete consequences: the return is cancelled, checked bags travel on to the final destination, and frequent flyer accounts can be closed. Airlines have pursued travellers for damages over it. An honest calculation weighs the saving against those risks, not just against the fare difference.

Not to be confused with#

Hidden-city ticketing is not the same as a misconnection: a misconnection happens involuntarily, a hidden-city ticket is booked that way on purpose.

  • Conditions of carriage: Conditions of carriage are an airline’s general contract terms, setting out the rights and duties of both sides for every ticket it sells.
