What are Married segments?

Married segments are flight legs that a reservation system only releases in a particular combination; searched on their own, the seat does not exist.

Also called: Married segment logic.

How it works#

A reservation system prices the journey from origin to destination, not the individual leg. To sell a long, high-value connection it opens seats on the feeder flight that stay closed when that feeder is searched alone. Looking for the same leg separately afterwards therefore returns nothing, which travellers usually mistake for a glitch or for someone else booking the seat.

Not to be confused with#

Married segments are not the same as a full flight: the seat exists and is being sold, but only bundled with the matching second leg.

In German#

The German term is Verheiratete Segmente. German version of this term

  • Award availability: Award availability is the number of seats an airline releases on a given flight for redemption with miles, which is usually far smaller than the number of seats still on sale.
  • Phantom award space: Phantom award space is an award seat a search displays but cannot book, because the operating airline’s system does not confirm it.
  • Revenue management: Revenue management is the process by which an airline distributes seats across price levels in order to maximise total revenue on a flight.
