What is Partner award?

A partner award is a redemption in which one programme's miles pay for a flight operated by a different airline.

A partner award is a redemption in which one programme’s miles pay for a flight operated by a different airline.

Also called: Partner redemption.

How it works#

The price comes from the chart of the programme the miles sit in, not from the pricing of the airline doing the flying. This produces the widest price gaps in the whole system: the same seat on the same aircraft can cost several times more depending on which miles are used. Partner awards frequently cannot be booked online and require a phone call to the programme.

Not to be confused with#

A partner award is not the same as a codeshare: a codeshare is about whose flight number sells the seat, a partner award about which programme debits the miles.

In German#

The German term is Partner-Prämie. German version of this term

  • Saver award: A saver award is the cheapest award level in a programme, the level that is tightly rationed and the only one partner programmes are able to book.
  • Airline alliance: An airline alliance is a grouping of carriers that credit each other’s miles, recognise each other’s status and allow award bookings across the group.
  • Award availability: Award availability is the number of seats an airline releases on a given flight for redemption with miles, which is usually far smaller than the number of seats still on sale.
