A resort fee is a mandatory daily hotel charge for bundled amenities, added on top of the room rate that was displayed.
Also called: Destination fee, Facility fee.
How it works#
The fee does two jobs: it lowers the visible price in search results and stays outside commission and sometimes outside points earning. It is charged whether or not the listed amenities are used. On award stays some programmes waive it entirely, which is a genuine and quantifiable advantage of certain redemptions.
Not to be confused with#
A resort fee is not the same as a local tourist tax: the hotel keeps the resort fee, whereas a tourist tax is collected on behalf of a municipality.
