Through-checked baggage is luggage tagged to the final destination at the first departure, so it does not need collecting at the connecting airport.
Also called: Baggage checked through.
How it works#
It requires an agreement between the airlines involved and, in most cases, a single booking. Without that basis the bag stops at the transfer airport. Separately, several countries require customs clearance at the first point of arrival, so the bag must be collected and rechecked there regardless of the tag.
Not to be confused with#
Through-checked baggage is not the same as a guarantee it travels on the same flight: the tag governs handling, not loading priority.
