Transferable points are points held by a bank or card issuer that can be converted into the currencies of several airline and hotel programmes.
Also called: Bank points, Flexible points.
How it works#
Transferable points have several exits; an airline mile has exactly one. That difference is where the value sits: deciding which programme the points enter only at the moment of booking gives partial cover against any single programme devaluing. The price is a lower earning rate on some cards and the rule that a transfer, once made, is almost never reversible.
Not to be confused with#
Transferable points are not the same as miles in a frequent flyer account: miles already sit with the airline and can no longer be moved into another currency.
