What is Being walked?

Being walked is the consequence of hotel overbooking: the property houses the guest at a different hotel because no room is available.

Being walked is the consequence of hotel overbooking: the property houses the guest at a different hotel because no room is available.

Also called: Hotel walk.

How it works#

Chains regulate it in their programme terms: typically the first night is paid for, transport is provided and points compensation follows. The claim lies against the programme rather than the booking site and is settled at the desk, not later by form. Late arrivals without a guaranteed booking are walked first.

Not to be confused with#

Being walked is not the same as a room upgrade: an upgrade happens in the same property, a walk sends the guest to another one.

In German#

The German term is Verlegung in ein anderes Hotel. German version of this term

  • Overbooking: Overbooking is the deliberate sale of more seats than the aircraft has, because airlines plan for a predictable number of no-shows.
  • Hotel elite status: Hotel elite status is a tier in a hotel programme that holds out benefits such as room upgrades, breakfast or late checkout.
  • Room upgrade: A room upgrade is the allocation of a higher room category than the one booked, granted as an elite benefit and usually subject to availability.
